Window Reconditioning
Product Description
Yes, you can save your old windows. If you have vintage wood windows but they are drafty and no longer function properly, now there’s a better solution than full sash or window replacement if you’d like to keep your old windows. SP Custom Carpentry’s RetroBox™ is a proprietary process of upgrading your old sashes into a modern functioning window complete with tilt-in cleaning and upgraded weather-stripping.
If you like the look of your old wavy glass, the subtle, yet important character of true divided light and the inherent personality of old window sashes, then window reconditioning might be right for you. The process is simple and all work is done from the inside. First, we carefully remove the interior trim and remove the upper and lower sashes. The sash cords are cut and the weights are removed from the weight pockets. We insulate the weight pockets with fiberglass insulation and bring the sashes back to our workshop. Once back at the shop, a set of custom jambliners are built which can be finished (painted or stained) to match your existing trim. We carefully trim ¾” of an inch from each side of the sash and with a router, cut a groove for the weather-stripping. All exposed cuts are sealed with linseed oil. Tilt latches are installed which allow the sashes to tilt-in for cleaning. Finally, we test everything to make sure it works before heading back for the final installation. The final installation consists of installing the jambliners and re-installing your existing trim. What most homeowners like about SP’s window reconditioning process is that you get all the benefits of improved thermal performance, better noise mitigation and improved functionality while keeping the aesthetic look of your old windows. Available for standard 1-3/8th sashes and the larger 1-3/4th sashes.
